HOW MACUMIR WORKS

MacuMir uses phenomena described by David Hubel and Torsten Wiesel's 1981 Nobel Prize award.  They demonstrated that the cells in the visual cortex disassemble the image transmitted by the eyes into millions of bits of data then reorganizes that information into an image useful to the brain.  The process is not understood, but what is known is that this process is uniquely adaptive.  MacuMir takes advantage of this adaptability.

MacuMir system uses reflective imaging to help the brain keep its assumption about where the view should be, allowing the mind to create a new perception of the scene.

Comes with ballistic nylon padded case to hold the MacuMir viewer and optional lenses and filters.

According to recent New York Times articles, "vision aids, experts say, may even improve mood.  Lighthouse study of 584 low-vision patients found that people who used optical aids, either traditional or electronic suffered measurable less depression than those who did not have such help.  Dr. Amy Horowitz, Senior Vice President for Research at Lighthouse says, Optical aids do contribute significantly to a decline in depression and a decline in disability in the first six months.  By contrast", the article goes on to say, "so-called adaptive aids like large-print books, talking clocks and Braille watches did not reduce depression."

Recent discoveries of pigments in the healthy macula that are believed to block harmful blue light rays is the reason why MacuMir offers blue blocker lenses, filters, in additional to an array of other tints to help with contrast, light scatter, and protection from the damaging ultraviolet light spectrum.

For those macular degeneration patients with corrective vision in either eye, MacuMir offers a variety of off-the-shelf readers or doctor's prescription to retain any correctible acuity.

For some the adaptive period is very short, often immediate.  For others the 'getting used to' period is longer.

MacuMir vision aid uses a system of aluminized carbon-epoxy mirrors and optional polycarbonate lenses and filters.
